The boys are on the last string before total chaos. They were playing with Robert but took it to far and almost killed him. When I first started to read this book this was the last thing that I thought would happen. My prediction for the last couple chapters is that someone will startle the boys or anger them and the boys go too far and actually kill him. I believe the monster hunt is just a false hope at at getting rid of their fear.
